This year, for the 10 Parishes festival, I have been working on a series of still life paintings that focus the container and the contained. I have, like most collectors, an enormous range of useful objects. In my case they are mostly useful for me just to look at. I have gathered some of these objects together and presented them together as if for a family photograph. If a jug looks like it doesn’t like a vase, it’s probably true. As I set up the still lives it was like organising an unruly bunch of siblings, eventually they organise themselves and are ready to present themselves in a dignified manner.

I like that what you see in the end is calm and composed. Whatever the real lives of these objects are, it is contained within the idealism of what we suppose reflects harmony. The natural colouring aids this and also reflects the simplicity of materials used to make everyday things, clay, metal and stone. There is something timeless about the still life, the jug, the vessel, the pot, they are the simple objects of civilisation. I have enjoyed doing these paintings; they have given me chance to value possessions that I had forgotten about or neglected to appreciate fully. I hope the paintings will compliment the other work being show in the gallery.
