Brief CV
After studying Art History at the Courtauld Institute in London, I have followed a career that involves teaching art (mostly at F.E. level), and exhibiting my work. As a printmaker I have won prizes at the Millfield and Bridport Art Centre Open competitions, and been selected for the National Print Exhibitions and the Royal Academy Summer shows on several occasions. I have work in Musgrove Park Hospital and the Russel Cotes Museum in Bournemouth, as well as in St James Church in Taunton.
Artist Statement
I have a studio at Hurstone, near Waterrow. It is a place where I can work without interruption and become absorbed by my work surrounded by the sound of birds and running water -subjects which often find their way into my images! My main inspiration and material is wood. Organic and tactile in its structure and form, I carve into the surface using the grain and knots as a starting point for finding the image within. I work on projects for exhibition, as illustrated below, and also on commissions, private and public. I produce prints on wood and relief carvings.
Below is a review written by Genista Wheatley on an exhibition held earlier this year at the Brewhouse, Taunton:
The Forest, La Foret, Der Wald 13th Jan – 24th Feb, 2007.
A place of refuge, a place for dreams, the forest is our primeval birthplace from which many of our myths and cultures developed. In a fascinating exhibition, opening on 13th January at the Brewhouse Gallery in the Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre, Taunton, artist Jane Mowat explores the forest through carved and printed images with a back drop of created sound.
Speaking about the work Jane Mowat says, 'I have been carving into wood and producing woodcuts for about ten years, and the thought of producing a body of work specifically connected to trees gradually came to me about two years ago. It seemed a natural idea to explore, since I work almost exclusively with this wonderful, organic material.
In previous exhibitions I have exhibited the inked up blocks along side the prints. In this exhibition the blocks are carvings in themselves, and line the walls vertically, a forest of forms and shapes. Instead of framing the prints I decided to make a feature of them by hanging them within the actual space of the gallery as suggestions of trees, as light and ephemera perhaps as ideas, or as tricks of light and shade.
The sound track was created by me, with sounds captured in various locations in the South West, and using thoughts and reflections from a few friends and members of my family. I am grateful for their contributions, as it has enriched my experience and given me valuable insights into their own thoughts about our universal heritage of the forest.'
Jane Mowat studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute and has a studio at Hurstone, near Wiveliscombe, Somerset. She has been exhibiting prints for over 20 years across the South West as well as London and became fascinated by wood - its grain, surface, form and shape - about ten years ago.
As part of this exhibition there are small monoprints of leaves and plants for sale. The money raised through these will be directly donated to 'Tree Aid', a charity committed to helping poor communities in Africa to replant trees lost through deforestation and restore tree cover for future generations.
