John Foster studied Fine Art at the Slade School U.C.L. Awarded a Norwegian Government Scholarship he then worked in Upper Egypt and Nubia at the time of the building of the Aswan High Dam. After a career in Art Education he has, since 1990, painted the landscape in West Somerset and West Penwith.
After working for many years in an abstract idiom he returned to landscape painting in Somerset via an interest in the history of gardens at the time of the restoration of Monet's garden at Giverny and the plat at Hestercombe. This, and visits to Italy, led to large charcoal drawings of gardens, which was followed by painting in the landscape. Apart from several periods painting near Cape Cornwall, John has worked from the changing agricultural landscape around Milverton.
Clatworthy and Wimbleball Reservoirs became the source of a series of large paintings made specifically for the Phillips Gallery in Taunton in May/June 2005.
Currently he is exploring the landscape of the Brendon Hills for the approaching 10 Parishes Festival.
John's work has been exhibited in London and in regional art centres and is represented in public and private collections here and abroad.
