Angora Goats at West Holwell Farm
- About the Event
- Although retired now, the owners have bred hundreds of Angora goats over the last 20 years. The flock was once the largest in the country. The goats produce mohair from which the owners have made garments, rugs and blankets, some on display.

Angora goats were imported into the UK in 1982 from New Zealand. Unlike dairy goats they do not produce milk - only enough for their offspring. Their main function is life is to produce mohair - a luxurious fibre that is stronger than wool, fire retardant and, because it is a fibre, does not harbour bacteria - hence the wonderful comfortable socks that are made from it. Kid mohair is the finest and most expensive and is generally used for top fashion designer garments and fine suiting - mainly in Italy. Other uses are for carpeting, upholstery fabrics, knitwear and fashion accessories.
Mrs King and Miss Williams have been involved with angora goats for over 20 years and at one time farmed over 500. Now retired, they have downsized and no longer produce designer knitwear and clothing. For the 10 Parishes festival, the farm is open to visitors and Mrs King will be happy to show the goats and some of the products they used to produce. General enquiries about angora goats are welcome at any time.
